I liked this sentence: "...Fantastic post, Mary. I liked this sentence: "And the prudence of...well...I can't really think of any prudent people." Prudence really is a tricky thing; Aristotle describes it for a while in the NE, then stops and says more or less: "Pericles, that's what I mean by prudence."

There was a Straussian at Claremont who was so obsessed with Plato that he criticized Aristotle for being "too thin" on Prudence. I told the guy he was full of it, because Aristotle's account is necessarily thin to be true to the mental phenomenon. Anscombe gives some good reasons for this in the sections on phronesis in "Intention."

Thomas Aquinas has an interesting gloss on Aristotle's phronesis; he says that principles are applied in particular circumstances in a more or less "anological" fashion (r.e. Thomas on analogy of being). Some principles ought to be applied literally in nearly all circumstances (i.e. first priciples of natural law). Other priciples ought to be applied more loosely and analogously, based on circumstances. The latter principles are the the gray area where the people who make prudent decisions truly show themselves. You can really only turn to paradigms for this, such as Lincoln. But there are really are few Lincolns...1buttercreamnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1281390015518442188.post-58036048916885173282010-06-21T21:17:54.410-07:002010-06-21T21:17:54.410-07:00Hey Mary, I got to teach American History this yea...Hey Mary, I got to teach American History this year - you're gonna love it. Obviously, you already do :)One of favorite moments was when my 7th graders said "Oh, please, Miss Turner, can we see what Paul Johnson has to say about Teddy Roosevelt? I bet he has a great description!" If you're trying to stick close to primary sources, then a great resource is the National Archives, which has the 100 most important documents in US history. You can buy it in book form at B&N, but it's all online too. Enjoy! And yes, teaching Latin is awesome :)Ellen RM Turnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11778933118130435874noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1281390015518442188.post-89811507539379931402010-06-20T07:59:52.513-07:002010-06-20T07:59:52.513-07:00That video is pure awesome. I really love that part of baking (the working with flour and not much else, in this case butter, part). Actually, the pie itself was more in the "pretty good" category than the "excellent" category, but it was a pleasant way to spend five hours.Mary Sextonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04191292882369976934noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1281390015518442188.post-42890645430166478022010-06-13T14:37:59.039-07:002010-06-13T14:37:59.039-07:00I always considered the guitar solos to be the &qu...I always considered the guitar solos to be the "Apollinian" side of heavy metal. Those high-pitch clarion tones are such a contrast to the crunch of the rhythm guitars and inescapable pounding of the percussion. The entire demeanor of a band changes when the soloist launches into his complex, often classically-inspired sequence.

Some metal does not include guitar solos, particularly since the advent of "Nu metal" and the 7-string guitar; I'm inclined to think that these artists tend more to the Dionisian. Aristotle himself showed a strong dislike for instrumental soloists in Politics Book VIII; this was not the kind of music conducive for the education of the soul, he says. I rarely disagree with Aristotle, but I'm inclined to think that instrumental solos, when successfully blended with the rest of musike, adds to the cathartic experience.1buttercreamnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1281390015518442188.post-20496657891461242772010-06-09T14:24:53.584-07:002010-06-09T14:24:53.584-07:00Yes!
